# Conceptual Data Object

> High-level representations of business data that describe meaning, context, and relationships — independent of technical implementation.

**Conceptual Data Objects (CDOs)** are high-level representations of business data that describe meaning, context, and relationships without reference to technical details such as fields, schemas, or storage mechanisms. They provide an abstract, technology-independent view of data, enabling organisations to capture and communicate business concepts in a way that is easily understood across both business and IT stakeholders.

CDOs are business-centric abstractions that describe the meaning, structure, and interrelationships of enterprise data without reference to any technology or implementation.

CDOs provide a shared vocabulary for executives, business analysts, and architects. They capture what each piece of information represents and how it connects to other concepts, enabling strategic decision-making at an early stage of system design or data architecture. By remaining independent of databases, file formats, or platforms, CDOs foster clear communication across stakeholders and serve as the foundation for subsequent logical and physical models.

This approach helps model business concepts and relationships at a strategic level, focusing on what the data represents rather than how or where it’s stored or processed.

By adopting CDOs, an enterprise ensures that all stakeholders — whether they sit on the boardroom table or in the data centre — are speaking the same language about its information assets.

## Who uses the CDOs?

Every business unit that creates, processes, or consumes data — whether it’s Sales, Finance, Operations, or IT — relies on these objects to drive decisions and actions.

## Why each CDO matters

A well-defined CDO ensures that all stakeholders speak the same language about a key concept (e.g., “Customer” or “Invoice”). It eliminates ambiguity, reduces data duplication, and makes cross-functional reporting reliable.
